AT THE FILM CEMETERY
Thierno Souleymane Diallo
France, Senegal, Guinea - 2023 - 93 min
synopsis
In 1953, Mamadou Touré made the film “Mouramani”. This film is considered to be the first made by a French-speaking black African filmmaker. But it remains a mystery. No one knows where to find a copy, if one exists. “Au cimetière de la pellicle” is the search for this film. I am the director who sets off, camera in hand, in search of “Mouramani”. During my journey, I try to find out what happened to the filmmakers, films and movie theaters of my country, once a pioneer of African cinema. “Au cimetière de la pellicle” is also a road movie. I cross Guinea from east to west, from north to south, turning my camera towards History. My quest then takes me to France, to the CNC archives, to meet specialists in African cinema, to march in the streets with a placard demanding the return of “Mouramani”… But is the film really there?
